Northern Lights Gospel Quartet

Northern Lights enjoys sharing Southern Gospel music, and was organized primarily to sing at churches and community events in the Northern Minnesota region. A secondary but no less important activity for the quartet is to sing for local high school choir programs. Although our repertoire is oriented toward Southern Gospel, you also may find us singing an occasional 50's, doo-wop, or barbershop arrangement, since we are all members of the Heart O' Lakes Harmony chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society, where we serve as the four section leaders of the chorus. It may be unusual to find four guys singing Southern Gospel, all of whom have a background in barbershop harmony, but it certainly helps in creating the harmonies that Southern Gospel requires.

Comments about Northern Lights Quartet![]() Pastor Paul Twist
"Over the years, as a pastor, I have had dozens of gospel quartets minister in church. The Northern Lights Gospel Quartet is among those at the top.
Their very first concert was given as the Sunday morning service in the church I now pastor. The entire congregation and I were very pleased. Their solo voices blended well together, presenting a very uplifting and lively concert. It was sacred and honoring to the Lord, yet with an entertaining delivery, both vocally and through their facial expressions. Woven in during the hour was light humor that was unique to the quartet, in good taste and delightfully humorous. I've listened to enough quartets to know that some so called humor is anything but humor and would be better left unsaid. Not so with the Northern Lights men. They also presented a clear gospel message in both song and through their spoken introductions. It was just enough to present the Lord clearly to all who were in attendance. This concert was in place of our normal morning worship service, and as Pastor, I felt the congregation was lead in a service of worship to the Lord. I highly recommend them to minister in your church, Sunday morning, or any other time. They are already invited back to our church to perform this summer. My cell phone is 218- 639-4618, so if you have any questions, feel free to call me, or email me at pjtwist@abetterwireless.com. I am confident you and your congregation will be blessed in every way with the singing and ministry of the Northern Lights Gospel Quartet." Paul J. Comments from a School Choir Director "As a high school choir director, I am continually trying to expose my students to many different types of performers, choirs, and musicians. It was my extreme pleasure to host the Northern Lights Gospel Quartet in January of 2012. They sang for my auditioned women's choir and my mixed A Cappella Choir and were a great success!
The students were very impressed not only at the talent of these four men, but also their stage presence. They truly made this an educational experience and discussed topics such as vowel formation, singing in tune, vocal ranges and relating to your audience. The best part is they presented the information with an amazing sense of humor. The students gave them glowing reviews! I am excited to have them back to possibly work in smaller groups with my singers. They gave me great ideas for TTBB repertoire, barbershop music, and even some fun mixed-voice tunes. The highlight of the day for me was to watch a male quartet from our choir join forces with the Northern Lights Quartet on a barbershop tune we had been working on!" Bill Gaither says: “All through college, I sang in quartets, including a barbershop quartet. Four-part harmony was my love." Upon attending an international barbershop quartet competition in 2006, Bill said, "I was in awe the entire night listening to barbershop quartets sing a cappella. I was intimidated by their ability; it was amazing......What Southern Gospel quartets can learn from Barbershop is how to sing as one voice.”
